Tips for Preventing Crimes of Opportunity

Please consider the following tips to help secure your home from burglaries.

• Consider two locks on entry doors
• Obscure windows with blinds or drapery
• Couple sliding doors with glass break alarm sensors and/or safety bars that prevent the door from opening
• Set lights on timers
• Install security cameras and monitor activity on your property
• Maintain a well-lit property
• Remove garbage receptacles from curbside and empty mailbox or have mail held at the post office when away from home for extended periods
• Communicate with your neighbors. Regular communication may help your neighbors notice when something or someone is suspicious.

Please consider the following tips to help secure your vehicle from theft:

• Lock your doors and activate the alarm regardless of where you park
• Always remove your keys/ key fob from the vehicle when exiting, including when letting the car “warm-up” on cold days and pumping your gas
• If your vehicle has GPS ensure it is activated with the monitoring company
• Remove valuables from plain sight
